What Are Cannabinoids?
Hemp produces over 100 known cannabinoids — chemical compounds that interact with the human body's endocannabinoid system (ECS). The ECS regulates mood, sleep, pain, immune response, and more. While CBD dominates the market, other cannabinoids are gaining serious research attention.
Understanding the differences helps you choose the right product for your specific wellness goals.
The Major Hemp Cannabinoids
| Cannabinoid | Full Name | Primary Research Areas |
|---|---|---|
| CBD | Cannabidiol | Anxiety, pain, inflammation, epilepsy |
| CBG | Cannabigerol | Focus, gut health, antibacterial |
| CBN | Cannabinol | Sleep support, appetite |
| CBC | Cannabichromene | Mood, neurogenesis, acne |
| CBDA | Cannabidiolic acid | Nausea, inflammation (raw form of CBD) |
| THCv | Tetrahydrocannabivarin | Appetite suppression, blood sugar (trace amounts in hemp) |
CBD — The Most Studied Cannabinoid
CBD (cannabidiol) is the dominant cannabinoid in most hemp strains and the most extensively researched. It does not bind directly to CB1 or CB2 receptors but modulates them indirectly, reducing anxiety signals, dampening inflammatory responses, and interacting with serotonin receptors.
The FDA has approved one CBD-based drug — Epidiolex — for rare forms of epilepsy, marking the first cannabis-derived medicine to receive full approval.
CBG — The "Mother Cannabinoid"
CBG is called the mother cannabinoid because all other cannabinoids start as CBGA (cannabigerolic acid) before converting into CBD, THC, or others. Mature hemp plants contain only small amounts of CBG.
Research suggests CBG may support focus and cognitive clarity, inhibit bacterial growth (including MRSA), and support digestive health. It is non-intoxicating and generally well tolerated.
CBN — The Sleep Cannabinoid
CBN forms naturally as THC oxidises over time. It is mildly psychoactive at very high doses but at typical supplement levels produces no intoxicating effect. Early studies and anecdotal evidence suggest CBN combined with CBD may improve sleep onset and duration.
The Entourage Effect
Taking multiple cannabinoids together appears to produce stronger effects than any single compound alone. This is called the entourage effect. Full-spectrum hemp products leverage this by preserving the full chemical profile of the plant — cannabinoids, terpenes, and flavonoids working in concert.
If you are sensitive to THC, broad-spectrum products remove THC while keeping all other cannabinoids intact.
