The Three Types of Hemp Extract

Every hemp oil or tincture falls into one of three categories based on how it is processed. Understanding these is the most important buying decision you will make.

TypeCannabinoidsTHCBest For
Full-spectrumAll cannabinoids including THC≤ 0.3%Maximum effect via entourage
Broad-spectrumAll cannabinoids, THC removedNoneTHC-sensitive users
IsolateCBD onlyNonePrecise dosing, drug testing concerns

Full-Spectrum: The Entourage Effect

Full-spectrum extract preserves the complete chemical profile of the hemp plant — CBD, CBG, CBN, terpenes, and trace THC. Research suggests these compounds amplify each other's effects, a phenomenon called the entourage effect.

This is generally considered the most potent form for therapeutic use. The THC level is too low to cause intoxication but contributes to the overall effect.

Broad-Spectrum: Best of Both Worlds

Broad-spectrum uses a secondary filtration step to remove THC completely while preserving other cannabinoids and terpenes. It offers a modified entourage effect without any risk of THC-related side effects or failed drug tests.

Ideal for: people who are THC-sensitive, work in industries with drug testing, or live in countries with strict THC regulations.

Isolate: Maximum Purity, Minimum Complexity

CBD isolate is 99%+ pure CBD — all other compounds removed. It has no taste, no smell, and is useful for adding to food and beverages. However, without the supporting cannabinoids and terpenes, it is generally less effective per milligram than full or broad-spectrum.

Extraction Methods: Why They Matter

MethodQualityNotes
CO2 extractionHighestClean, no residual solvents, preserves full profile
Ethanol extractionGoodCommon, effective, slight risk of chlorophyll taste
Olive oil extractionAdequateSimple, safe, lower shelf life
Hydrocarbon extractionAvoidRisk of residual solvents (butane, propane)

Always choose products that use CO2 or ethanol extraction, and verify via the COA.

How to Read a Label

  1. Total CBD mg — total cannabinoids in the whole bottle
  2. Serving size mg — CBD per dose (usually per dropper)
  3. Extract type — full/broad-spectrum or isolate
  4. Carrier oil — MCT coconut oil (fastest absorption), hemp seed oil (nutritional bonus), olive oil
  5. Batch number — allows you to find the COA for that specific batch
